They decided that the captain of the first team will be the one with the longest
name, i.e., the one with the most letters. The captain of the second team will be the
one with the shortest name, i.e., the one with the fewest letters.

                     1. Find out the captains of the 2 teams. How many letters are there in their
                        names?

The information collected in the form of numerical figures in a survey is known as data.

                recording data

Data can be recorded in a table using tally marks which is a quick way of keeping

track of numbers in groups of five. We use vertical lines for tally marks. We draw
one vertical line (l) for every data point (number). For four data points, we draw four
vertical lines. The fifth data point is represented by a line across the previous four.

Look at the following table. It represents students of class 3 who have birthdays in the
                months of a year.

Month tally marks Number of students Month tally marks Number of students

February III 3 August IIII 4
March IIII I 6 September IIII IIII 10

April IIII 5 October IIII II 7
May III 3 November IIII 5

June II 2 December IIII 4

Now, the following questions can be answered by observing the above tables.

                  a. How many months have birthdays of five students each? April and November

                  b. Which month has birthdays of the most students? September

                  c. Which month has birthdays of the least number of students? July

                                                                                                             207
